AUC Honors Atef Eltoukhy For decades of Leadership, Service and Giving
– The American University in Cairo (AUC) is recognizing Atef Eltoukhy ’74, an alumnus, former instructor, trustee and board chair, for more than five decades of connection, leadership, service and philanthropy at AUC, in Egypt and the world. Eltoukhy’s efforts have advanced educational opportunities, supported future generations of students and contributed to the development of his homeland.
Eltoukhy’s relationship with AUC began in the 1970s, when he joined the University community as a graduate student and instructor in the Department of Materials Science. In 2012, he joined the Board of Trustees, where he led both the Advancement and Investment Committees. In 2016, he was elected chair of the Board, becoming the first American of Egyptian origin and the first AUC alumnus to serve in the role. “I’ve been associated with AUC for more than 40 years, and I was deeply honored when I was elected to lead the board. As an alumnus and long-time supporter of the University, I recognize the critical importance of AUC in shaping the future of my native Egypt and the Middle East region. I love AUC,” Eltoukhy said.
Beyond governance, Eltoukhy has played an active role in advancing educational opportunities at AUC. Together with his wife, Fofa, he established the Atef and Fofa Eltoukhy Family Endowed Scholarship for talented and deserving Egyptian students. Their generosity also made possible the Eltoukhy Learning Factory at AUC’s School of Sciences and Engineering, a state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary facility where students turn ideas into solutions through hands-on design, prototyping and entrepreneurial thinking.
Reflecting on Eltoukhy’s longstanding contributions to the University, AUC President Ahmad Dallal said, ”Dr. Eltoukhy is an accomplished scientist, entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist whose career has been marked by innovation and perseverance. Throughout his journey, education has remained a constant. At AUC, this commitment has taken the form of decades of leadership, generosity and service. And throughout it all, Fofa has been his partner. Together, they have opened doors for talented students and helped give them the support they need to make the most of their education.”
Eltoukhy’s support for education extends beyond AUC’s campus, helping expand opportunities for students in Egypt, the United States and across the Middle East. Through the Eltoukhy Family Foundation, Eltoukhy and his family have sponsored endowed fellowships at Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley, and he and Fofa funded the Eltoukhy Family Innovation Lab for materials science students at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In Egypt, the family established the Helmy Eltoukhy School in Sharqiya in honor of Eltoukhy’s father. Their philanthropy also supports international exchange and cross-cultural understanding through the Eltoukhy East-West Gateway Fellowship at Berkeley’s International House, as well as charitable organizations including the Magdi Yacoub Global Heart Foundation.
Born in Sharqiya, Egypt, Eltoukhy earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Cairo University before pursuing his PhD in metallurgical engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. After earning his doctorate in 1978, he served as an assistant professor at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
In 1981, Eltoukhy moved from academia into the technology industry, joining IBM’s San Jose research laboratory as a research scientist, where he conducted pioneering research on magnetic materials and sputtering technologies for data storage. In 1983, he left IBM to co-found TriMedia Corporation and later StorMedia Corporation, that went public in 1995. His work contributed to the industry’s transition from conventional particulate media to thin-film magnetic recording, a key step toward high-density digital storage, which became fundamental to the computer industry.
A prolific inventor and researcher, Eltoukhy is considered a pioneer of digital disk storage technology. He holds numerous patents and has published on semiconductor materials, magnetic thin films, sputtering and disk texturing. In 2015, he received the Distinguished Merit Alumni Award from the Materials Science and Engineering Alumni Association at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Following his technology career, Eltoukhy brought his analytical and entrepreneurial skills to quantitative investment management. Drawing on his mathematical and statistical background, he developed quantitative trading strategies for equities and derivatives. He co-founded and chaired Aurum Capital Management, a California-based family-office investment firm, and Aurum Securities, and built a record of more than 30 consecutive profitable years. Across his career, Eltoukhy has co-founded four successful ventures spanning two industries: digital storage technology and investment management.
The Eltoukhy Family has lived in the U.S. since he and his wife, Fofa got married in 1975. Their family lives in Woodside and Atherton, CA and includes their two sons, Helmy and Eddie, who hold PhDs from Stanford Univ. and MIT, respectively. They are now entrepreneurs and venture capitalists in Silicon Valley. But the joy of their lives are their six grandchildren.
