The British University in Egypt, through its Faculty of Law, Boosts its Academic Partnership with the University of Hamburg, Expanding International Learning Opportunities for Students

The Faculty of Law at The British University in Egypt delivered last week the first intensive course of its kind at the University of Hamburg, on Human Rights Diplomacy from a Global South Perspective. The course, open to students from both universities, culminated in a workshop on parallel legal systems, interfaith dialogue, law, and society, chaired by Professor Ibrahim Salama, Dean of the Faculty of Law. The course, hosted in Hamburg, Germany, extends the Faculty’s growing network of partnerships with leading international institutions, offering its students a learning experience directly connected to contemporary legal systems and international developments.

This innovative cooperation affirms the Faculty of Law’s standing as one of the leading law schools at the regional and international levels, combining academic study at British standards with a focus on legal reforms through genuine engagement in international legal affairs.

Professor Salama, who also serves as Director of the Human Rights Research and Training Centre and Founder of the United Nations “Faith for Rights” framework, has undertaken a series of academic and scientific engagements during his visit to Hamburg. Through the Hamburg programme, students of The British University in Egypt joined their German counterparts in a joint course, gaining exposure to high-level academic and professional expertise and taking part in discussions on global questions of human rights, international law, diplomacy, and sustainable development.

Commenting on this collaboration, Professor Salama said, “Diplomacy has reversed its trends: from capitals to cities, from governmental departments to private entities, and from political discussions to scientific, academic, trade, and cultural engagement. Consulates have become more influential than embassies. By gathering our students and their German peers in a joint course at the University of Hamburg, we are giving the next generation a lived experience of this new non-state actors diplomacy, one built on dialogue, science, research, and shared purpose.”

The partnership was also highlighted by Ambassador Dahlia Abdel Fattah, Consul General of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Hamburg, at the celebration of Egypt’s 74th National Day, hosted by the Consulate General on Tuesday, 8 July 2026, at the Egyptian House, the residence of the Consul General. The celebration was attended by Ms. Katharina Fegebank, Second Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, as guest of honour, alongside Ms. Corinna Nienstedt, Head of the State Office of the Hamburg Senate; Colonel Mohamed Mostafa Mosalhy, Egyptian Defence Attaché in Berlin; senior officials of the Hamburg State Government; and representatives of the academic, diplomatic, and economic communities. In her opening address, Ambassador Abdel Fattah highlighted the growing momentum of academic cooperation between The British University in Egypt and German institutions, noting the shared commitment of both sides to translating cooperation agreements into practical and sustainable programmes.

The Faculty of Law at The British University in Egypt is committed to preparing graduates with a global legal vision, through a learning environment that combines theoretical study with practical application and a wide network of international partnerships, qualifying them for careers in legal institutions, international organisations, diplomatic bodies, and multinational corporations.

The British University in Egypt continues to invest in building sustainable academic cooperation with international universities and institutions, opening new horizons for its students in study, research, and training, and strengthening the competitiveness of its graduates at the national and international levels.

Students of the Faculty of Law at The British University in Egypt earn a dual degree upon graduation: one validated by Egypt’s Supreme Council of Universities and the other awarded by the University’s UK academic partner, London South Bank University, giving them qualifications recognised in both Egypt and the United Kingdom.
