AUC STUDENTS SECURED FIRST PLACE INTHE ALL-AFRICA UNIVERSITY GAMES IN NIGERIA

Students of the American University in Cairo (AUC) won first place in the 11th All-Africa University Games held last week in Lagos, Nigeria competing against 70 universities from 35 African countries that participated in the 2024 games, organized under the auspices of the Federation of the African University Sports (FASU).

AUC students achieved an impressive total of 81 medals, including 46 gold, 27 silver and 8 bronze surpassing co-hosts the Lagos State University (LASU) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) who finished second and third positions respectively. “We are immensely proud of our students for their outstanding achievement in the All-Africa University Games.

This victory marks our second win, following our first-place finish at the 10th All-Africa University Games in Kenya two years ago, and it highlights the students’ hard work, dedication and spirit. This achievement is a celebration not only of athletic excellence but also of the vibrant community at AUC that supports our athletes every step of the way,” said Sharif Erian, senior director of athletics.

The 28-member team achieved medals in judo, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, swimming, chess, and karate. AUC’s swimming team dominated the swimming events, securing an unprecedented 39 gold medals, 28 silver medals and 7 bronze medals. Additionally, this championship marked AUC’s first international participation in karate, where the team secured its first gold medal, representing a significant milestone for AUC athletics.

AUC participated twice in the All-Africa University Games. The first was in Nairobi, Kenya in 2022, where the students finished in first place winning a total of 68 medals, 29 gold, 22 silver and 18 bronze. In that edition, the University emerged as the overall champion, contributing to Egypt’s top position in the country’s medal standing. This year, AUC returned to compete in Lagos, Nigeria.

The All-Africa University Games, also known as FASU Games, is a premier continental multi-sport event organized by the Federation of Africa University Sports every two years. The games were first held in 1975 in Accra, Ghana.
