For the first time in Egypt:Hosting the 38th session of the Environmental Informatics Conference EnviroInfo 2024 at the German University in Cairo

Dr. Yasser Hegazy, President of the German University in Cairo, inaugurated the activities of the EnviroInfo 2024 Conference, one of the specialized conferences in the field of leading environmental information and communication technologies, whose activities continued for 3 days on the university campus in cooperation with the German Society for Informatics (GI). The conference aims to present and discuss the latest developments in the field of information and communication technology and fields related to the environment, through a number of important research tracks, namely environmental informatics, environmental modeling and simulation, global sustainability challenges, sustainable transportation, and green coding.

In the speech delivered by the university president on this occasion, he expressed his happiness at the university hosting the 38th session of the most important international environmental informatics conference, EnviroInfo, as it combines environmental and informatics issues, in addition to highlighting digital integration within the framework of sustainable development goals, which is of utmost importance for developing sustainable solutions, in light of the world facing escalating environmental challenges. Dr. Yasser pointed out that the university always supports scientific research and innovation and contributes to providing solutions to issues related to environmental challenges.

It is proud to host many international conferences held in Egypt within its campus, as it has hosted nine international conferences covering various fields over the past three years, and 6 conferences have been organized on its campus, which has enabled it to build a network of international relations.

Dr. Yasser continued that the university is the first German cross-border university that provides education according to German standards that combine education and scientific research, which is one of the basic pillars for all university members. They all have a research agenda through which their research outputs are published in prestigious scientific journals and participate in many international conferences.

This is in addition to its close and interconnected relationship with a number of German educational institutions through bilateral cooperation in joint research projects and student exchange programs or to spend a semester abroad in Germany or complete graduation projects there or through joint supervision of master’s and doctoral theses with the support of the German Academic Exchange Service and many German institutions.

This is what distinguishes the German University from its counterparts locally and internationally in following a unique academic teaching method. Professor Volker Wohlgemuth, Conference Chair and Spokesperson for the Environmental Information Committee of the German Informatics Association, Professor at HTW Berlin University, said that the activities of this conference are being held for the first time outside Europe in Egypt at the German University in Cairo campus, and included approximately 80 participants from several countries, including Egypt, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, Luxembourg and Cyprus, whether in person or online, in addition to the participation of 3 scientists as keynote speakers, and the organization of a number of workshops, announcing that 14 research papers were accepted for the conference and will be published in Springer – Progress in IS Series – a global publishing house that publishes books, including e-books, scientific, technical and medical journals.

He added that there are close bilateral scientific cooperation ties between the two universities through the SUSTAIN project supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), which focuses on aspects of sustainability and digital transformation.

For her part, Dr. Amna Ramzy, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Engineering and Materials Science at the German University in Cairo and co-chair of the conference, noted that holding the conference for the first time in Egypt outside the borders of Europe is a prominent event, as the conference aims to bring together researchers, practitioners and policy makers to present visions and facilitate cross-border cooperation to address common challenges using environmental informatics and enhance digital inclusion by bridging technological gaps in the context of sustainable development goals, noting that the EnviroInfo 2024 conference is committed to promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Egypt’s Vision 2030, and the conference topics included environmental informatics, environmental monitoring and sensing technologies, digital transformation and circular economy, sustainable software engineering, innovative solutions, environmental impact assessment, and sustainable development.
