Workshop on Generative Artificial Intelligence in Corporate Systems

Within the framework of the bilateral cooperation between the German University in Cairo and the Berlin University of Applied Sciences HTW, a workshop entitled “Generative Artificial Intelligence in Corporate Systems: “Integrating Internal Data through Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)” was held at the German University in Cairo campus for students of the Faculty of Management Technology.

Professor Dr. Stefan Wittenberg, an expert in ERP systems and business process management at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences, lectured during which he reviewed the concept of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and demonstrated how it works using practical examples, and the impact of Retrieval-Augmented Generation on Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems; especially with regard to systems such as SAP, and how this technology can change the way organizations use their data by integrating generative artificial intelligence into corporate systems, with a focus on the challenges and opportunities arising from integrating internal corporate data.

This was stated by Dr. Gamal Qassim, Professor of Business Informatics at the Faculty of Management Technology, who added that artificial intelligence is one of the most important emerging technologies that has a significant impact on the educational system, as it has given education enormous potential for social good to achieve sustainable development goals, noting that generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is a force that pushes the limits of what machines can achieve beyond what we are accustomed to.

According to this concept, an initiative was launched between the two universities (the German University in Cairo and the Berlin University of Applied Sciences), represented by Dr. Gamal Qassim and Dr. Stefan Wittenberg, with the support of Dr. Yasser Hegazy, President of the German University in Cairo, and Dr. Ihab Kamel Abu El-Khair, Vice President of the University for Student Affairs and Dean of the Faculty of Management Technology.

The main objective of this initiative is to participate in providing a professional training program for SAP system developers from graduates of the departments of Business Informatics and Computer Science.

The program takes 12 months to qualify them scientifically and skillfully and gain the necessary practical experience to develop SAP (an abbreviation for “System, Application & Products”), which is a complete system that By providing the facility or company with ready-made practical solutions so that it can structure and link all the facility’s departments in one system that eliminates the use of paper and other traditional systems, which qualifies its users to carry out any financial, administrative or technical process “while sitting in their place”.

At the end of the training program, participants will receive a program completion document, and the German University in Cairo (GUC) will undertake the task of conducting the SAP training program for the selected participants.

This program also includes training in developing both the ABAP programming language, which is used for development and customization purposes in SAP programs, and developing SAP Fiori, which is a group of web applications designed to run on computers and mobile devices, as it benefits from the principles and techniques of modern designs to transform complex business processes into simple interfaces at the consumer level. By adopting the Fiori design language, SAP aims to enhance productivity, enable self-service, and enable users to make informed decisions quickly and efficiently.

In addition, the two sides agreed to launch artificial intelligence development techniques using the large language model (LLM), which is an advanced type of artificial intelligence designed to understand and generate human-like texts to work with structured data. Dr. Qassim added that the training program will be completed by offering a number of German language courses and cultural workshops, to prepare participants to integrate into the Egyptian and German labor markets.
